Design as Inquiry
Where Practice Thinks: Robotic Making as Inquiry
When a Machine Becomes a Robot
What distinguishes a tool, a machine, and a robot?
Prioritizing Action Over Appearance
Shifting robotic design from visual form to movement and adaptive behavior.
Making as Research
In complex and uncertain contexts, designers work through iterative making, drawing on tacit knowledge and embodied experience.Through prototyping and reflective adjustment, robotic making becomes a form of inquiry where knowledge emerges through action.
What is a robot?
The word “robot” first appeared in literature, but today it describes real, physical systems.Through design decisions - how sensing, control, and interaction are configured - the distinction between tool, machine, and autonomous system becomes operational rather than theoretical.
Aesthetic
In many systems, visual form dominates design decisions. In this approach, perception is treated as action-oriented: sensing and movement form a continuous loop. A motor-centric design prioritizes timing, responsiveness, and embodied feedback over static visual form.
Areas of Expertise
I am a designer and researcher investigating how robotic systems can be shaped to operate meaningfully within human environments. Rather than simply designing robots, I lead research-driven design decisions that define how sensing, movement, and system behavior influence human experience. My work focuses on improving the conditions under which robotic systems support, augment, and coexist with human life.
